Creativity as a tool for the introvert.
I am a textbook introvert, give me two hours of socialising and I’m knackered. Over the past few months of soul searching, what I’ve realised is that this introversion has often been the underlying catalyst for my ideas and inspirations.
Generally, an introvert is one who gains energy by spending time alone and tends to feel tired after a certain amount of socialising. In spending time alone, I often find that my mind is buzzing with ideas and interesting revelations that socialising simply cannot replicate. I believe this harks back to the comfort and emotional freedom introverts have when alone. These “shower thoughts” acts a means for the introvert to truly understand and process the concepts that wander in their minds, and it may be difficult for introverts like myself to succinctly articulate these concepts to others in conversation alone.
Perhaps that is why so many introverts find a creative outlet for their thoughts. A quick Google search has highlighted that a generous amount of creative public figures are described as or exhibit qualities of an introvert. While I may not know the scientific correlation between the process of creativity and introverted personalities, I am personally aware that the act of dancing, feeling the rhythm and beat of music or dabbing paint in meaningful shapes in the best way to internally manage the bustling inner monologue. The simple act of creating is to clear the mind and allow expression in a non-verbal manner, the solitude providing a blank canvas for displaying ideas you’ve mulled over for weeks. Its probably the greatest reason and motivation for the artwork and sketches I produce, I mean, it’s easier to draw your favourite comic book character in a sketchbook than speak to someone about it.
Are you an introvert? How best do you manifest your creativity and how significant do you think the link between introversion and creative notions?
